Flag Symbolism Interpretation Activity

(7.21) Social Studies Skills. The student applies critical-thinking skills to organize and use information acquired from a variety of sources including electronic technology.

The student is expected to:

A. Differentiate between, locate and use primary and secondary sources such as computer software, databases, media and news services, biographies, interviews and artifacts to acquire information about Texas.

B. Analyze information about sequencing, categorizing, identify cause and effect relationships, comparing, contrasting, finding the main idea, summarizing, making generalizations and predictions, and drawing inferences and conclusions.

C. Organize and interpret information from outlines, reports databases and visuals including graphs, charts, timelines and graphs.

 

(7.22) Social studies Skills. The student communicates in written, oral, and visual forms.

The student is expected to:

A. Use social studies terminology correctly;
B. Use standard grammar, spelling, sentence structure, and punctuation;
C. Transfer information from one medium to another, including written to visual and statistical to written or visual, using computer software as appropriate.
D. Create written, oral, and visual presentations of social studies information.

ACTIVITY 1:
Using various internet and library resources, the student will research and find the meaning of each of the marked symbols on each of the flag worksheets below. He/she will then write a brief description of the meaning of each of the symbols on the back of the worksheet. Each student should color in the flag with the appropriate colors, especially the parts of a flag in which the color is indicative of meaning.

ACTIVITY 2:
Using the information on symbolism students learned in the first exercise, each student should create a Texas flag of his or her own.
They will choose the colors and symbols that they believe stand for Texas or that makes Texas special to them. Next have them write a statement explaining why they chose the colors and symbols they did.
