Texas Flag Exhibit

This Exhibition completed its tour on February 12, 2006--it is no longer showing

The pivotal offering of the Center's Historic Texas program during the next two years will be a traveling exhibition, entitled "Texas Flags." This exhibit, sponsored by Frost Bank and Heartland Alliance of America, consists of 29 historic flags associated with the state and on loan from eight different museums and archives from around Texas and other states. Between February 2004 and February 2006, the flags will be exhibited at the Bob Bullock Texas State History Museum, the El Paso Museum of Art, the George Bush Presidential Library and Museum, and at the National Cowgirl Museum and Hall of Fame in Fort Worth.

A conceptual view of the Texas Flags Exhibit appears to the right. The steel display stands are five feet wide, 11 feet high, and designed to stably house a 200-pound preservation compartment encasing each flag. The stands are painted a flat non-reflective blue, the room lighting is filtered through blue gels, and the flags are illuminated by white light inside each stand. This lighting effect causes the stands to fade into the background while the flags stand out starkly, creating the impression that the flags are floating in space. Because many of the flags are so large, it will be a breath-taking display.
